For the first time since 1979, the Oscars have revealed the shortlists for Best Original Song and Best Original Score ahead of the nominations. On the 15-song shortlist are Thom Yorke (“Suspirium”), Kendrick Lamar and SZA (“All the Stars”), Sampha (“Treasure”), Sade (“The Big Unknown”), Jónsi and Troye Sivan (“Revelation”), Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (“Shallow”), and more.
In Best Original Score, Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury’s Annihilation score is shortlisted alongside Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and more—though not Yorke’s Suspiria score. Neither Jonny Greenwood (You Were Never Really Here) nor Jóhann Jóhannsson (Mandy) picked up nominations in either category. See the full shortlist for each category below.
As The New York Times points out, several music-related films missed the cut for the Best Documentary Feature shortlist. The Aretha Franklin doc Amazing Grace, Netflix’s Quincy (about Quincy Jones), the long-awaited MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A., and the Whitney Houston documentary Whitney all failed to earn nominations.
Judges will now narrow the shortlists to five nominees, announced January 22.
